Studio Sessions with Lauren Nelson

Introducing our very first Studio Sessions with Bay Area-based interior designer, Lauren Nelson. Lauren is a member of Architectural Digest’s PRO Directory, and was recently named one of the Experts Top 40 Designers. In other words, she’s very much the real deal. We asked Lauren to stop by the studio to style our bathroom set with whatever QT products spoke to her. We loved her elevated take on Quiet Town—all neutral tones, chocolate stripes and hits of blue. Lauren also brought a few key pieces she loves to weave into the bathrooms she designs, like small art and a great monstera plant we wanted to keep for ourselves.

How would you describe your signature interior design work?

I strive for an aesthetic that doesn't fall into one category. I love the juxtaposition of modern and traditional. I love rustic wabi sabi minimalism just as much as I love classic millwork + stone detailing. Often people come to us for an aesthetic that feels timeless but also current, and that is the biggest goal I'd say. To design a space that could have legs into the next decade or 2 or 3, but also feels fresh, inspiring, and layered. Not one note.

Are there certain elements you always like to pull in when designing a bathroom?

Because a bathroom is by nature full of hard surfaces, I always try to layer in elements that introduce a softness or warmth. Often that's through natural wood, stone, handmade tile, and textiles - all which add texture to a bathroom.

Any thoughts on shower curtains? When do you opt in or out of using them?

I love using shower curtains for 2 reasons - 1. they add a visual softness and an opportunity for color and pattern, and 2. they allow easy access to showers/tubs in smaller bathrooms where a glass swing door would be more restricting.

What drew you to the pieces you pulled from Quiet Town for this Studio Session?

I loved the End Bits linen shower curtain and Ojai mat because I love a stripe and I'm drawn to natural materials. Plus that rug is the perfect weight and the neutral palette is so versatile with any color scheme. The End Bits robe is so yummy - the patch work textiles are gorgeous, soft and reminds me of a robe from my trip to Japan.
