Studio Sessions w/ Julia Sobrepena King

Interior designer Julia Sobrepena King stopped by the studio to style her version of the ultimate Quiet Town bathroom. She also brought along a few trusted pieces to create warmth and add texture to the space.

QT: How would you describe your signature interior design style?

JSP: My work is playful yet refined. We like to describe it as a little offbeat but still chic. I love playing with opposites in material and texture, incorporating different styles of antique and contemporary pieces that are very different yet somehow speak to each other. Color ends up playing  a large part of our projects, we try to put a lot of thought into what goes together in a room. We also try to be historically informed about the spaces we design, respecting the history of a space or finding inspiration from the past to inform the present.

QT: Are there certain elements you always like to pull in
when designing a bathroom?

JSP:  I find myself wanting a bathroom to feel warm and inviting so I often use wood --whether it be trim on the wall, mixing different types of wood on cabinets or throwing in a wood mirror or stool. I love how the right color or pattern with tile can transform a small space like
a bathroom . I also love unique hardware like knobs and hooks - any way to dress up the cabinets and make them feel unique.

QT: Any thoughts on shower curtains? When do you opt in or out of using them?

JSP: Shower curtains are great! A bathroom can feel rather cold with all the hard surfaces, so a shower curtain is a nice way to give it softness and character. They are perfect when there isn't  a lot of room for
a shower door, or for convenience (like in a kids' bathroom.) A shower curtain is also a very easy way to dramatically change the way a bathroom looks without
doing too much work.

QT: What drew you to the pieces you pulled from Quiet Town for this Studio Session?

JSP: I am a fan of an 80's grid pattern so I immediately
was drawn to this shower curtain, especially with the funky bronze/yellow color combo. I love throwing in similar patterns in a room, so I mixed the cherry and pine towels for pops of color. The wavy rugs gave it
a bit of playfulness, especially the psychedelic 60's inspired Lost Coast Rug, which is really fun.
